Making Smart Parcel Lockers More Accessible: The Idea Behind BlueBox

Five years of challenging traditional models, investing in innovation and making smart parcel lockers more accessible.

It Started With a Simple Question

Before we founded BlueBox, we asked ourselves a fundamental question:

What does North America actually need from a smart parcel locker service?

To answer it, we looked at mature parcel locker markets across Europe and Asia, where the technology was already widely adopted.

Back in North America, we saw a different picture. Smart parcel lockers were often positioned as a premium amenity, particularly in higher-end residential properties, rather than as practical infrastructure that could benefit a much broader range of communities and organizations.

At the same time, property managers were dealing with growing parcel volumes, package theft and the operational burden of managing deliveries. The solutions available could also require significant upfront investment, making the technology difficult to justify for some properties.

We saw an opportunity to do things differently.

That idea became BlueBox. Founded in Canada, we set out to make smart parcel locker technology more accessible without compromising the quality, technology or service behind it.

A Different Approach to the Traditional Purchase Model

One of the first areas we looked at was how customers pay for parcel locker systems.

Traditionally, adopting smart locker technology could mean purchasing the equipment upfront and making a significant capital investment before the system was even in operation.

We wanted to provide another option.

BlueBox introduced a flexible leasing model that allows customers to access our smart locker network through a monthly fee, reducing the need for a large upfront hardware investment.

For us, leasing isn’t simply a different way to pay for a locker. It reflects how we think about the relationship with our customers.

Rather than relying on a one-time hardware sale, our model gives us an ongoing responsibility to provide reliable technology, responsive support and a service that continues to deliver value.

We believe customers should stay with BlueBox because the product and service continue to work for them—not because they’re locked into a solution that no longer meets their needs.

That principle has helped shape how we operate from the beginning.

Making Quality More Accessible

Another assumption we wanted to challenge was that a high-quality smart locker system necessarily had to come with a high price.

Over the past five years, we’ve invested in building a global supplier network while keeping important capabilities—including product design, software development, final assembly, installation and customer support—with our own teams.

As the BlueBox network has grown, so has our purchasing scale and operational experience. That gives us more opportunities to improve efficiency, manage costs and pass those efficiencies on to our customers.

Our goal isn’t simply to offer a lower price.

It’s to deliver strong value: reliable products, capable technology and ongoing service at a price that makes smart lockers accessible to more organizations.

We believe affordability and quality can go together when the entire operation, from product development and sourcing to assembly, installation and support; BlueBox is designed with efficiency in mind.

Five Years of Building and Improving

What began as an idea about making parcel lockers more accessible has developed into something much larger.

Over the past five years, we’ve continued to invest in the technology and capabilities behind BlueBox.

We’ve developed more than 30 proprietary software operating modes to accommodate different applications and workflows. We’ve expanded our network to more than 1,000 locations across Canada. And in 2024, our smart locker system received the Red Dot Award: Design Concept – Best of the Best.

Each milestone reflects the same approach we started with: identify a practical problem, question whether the conventional solution is the best one, and find a better way to serve the customer.

We’ve also seen the broader market evolve. More providers are offering different pricing structures and leasing options, helping make smart parcel locker technology accessible to a wider range of customers.
We welcome that progress.

Because for BlueBox, making the technology more affordable was never the finish line.

The bigger goal is creating a better experience from beginning to end.

What’s Next for BlueBox

Five years gave us the opportunity to build the foundation. Now we’re focused on what comes next.

Our team is developing the next generation of BlueBox products, exploring new technology, product architecture and applications that can make our systems even more flexible and useful.

The market has changed considerably since we started, and we expect it to keep changing.

So will we.

But the question that started BlueBox remains just as relevant today:

What do our customers actually need—and how can we build it better?

That’s the question that brought us here, and it’s the one that will continue guiding where we go next.
